The Waitomo Caves are nothing short of spectacular, unbelievable to see the thousands of tiny glowworms shimmering from the cave roof top and the amazing limestone formations. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the caves and Maori culture his presentation was both educational and fun. This is a must see for anyone visiting New Zealand.

A great mix of action (abseiling, ziplining, climbing, and crawling through the cave passages) and enjoying the glowing webs of fly larvae on the cave ceiling.

Our tour guide was in a great mood and explained everything very well and clearly. He also cracked a few jokes here and there to lighten the mood. We received the photos from the tour right away, so we didn't really have to take any pictures ourselves.

We absolutely loved this adventure! From the start, putting on the wet suit to the practice backward jump with the tube to walking through the entrance and experiencing this hidden wonderland it was an incredible experience! We absolutely loved slowly floating on the underground stream with our headlamps off and looking up at the soft twinkle lights of the glow worms made it look like seeing different constellations in the sky plus Anna was singing and made the moment much more memorable! We felt very safe in doing this Blackwater adventure.

#Our Driver / Guide was fantastic! He always was present and always had an open ear. And he has a huge knowledge about the country and its history! Pick-up was on time and the bus well prepared. Everything was clean, which is very important to me.

Tour itself was great! Garth our guide was knowledgeable and personable. Address given by Headout on the ticket was bad! They had 204 Tumutumu, while the real address is 219 Tumutumu. 204 sent my navigator almost a mile up a gravel road to nowhere!

Talk was fascinating. Very enlightening. Great guide, friendly, bubbly and informative. Not allowed to take photos, seems a little strange to be asking for them

Aranui Cave’s geology: Key formations to spot

Stalactites & stalagmites

Formed over thousands of years as minerals drip and build up, these striking formations grow from cave ceilings and floors, sometimes meeting to create dramatic columns.

Flowstones & draperies

Thin sheets of calcite resemble frozen waterfalls or delicate curtains, created by water trickling over cave walls and leaving smooth, layered mineral deposits.

Fossil impressions

Hidden in the limestone are traces of ancient marine life, shells, corals, and tiny creatures that reveal the cave’s origins beneath an ancient seabed.

Karst

While not strictly inside the cave, the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve (the forest walk to Aranui) sits within a karst landscape, eroded limestone terrain with cliffs, sinkholes, and natural arches that reveal how these caves formed over millions of years.

Visiting Aranui Cave: Essential tips

  • Arrive early for quieter tours: Aranui Cave offers smaller group tours compared to the Glowworm Cave, but they can still fill up during peak season. Arriving earlier in the day gives you a better chance at a relaxed, less-crowded visit.
  • Avoid strong perfumes or sprays: Scents can impact the delicate cave environment and disturb the natural ecosystem. For the best experience, keep fragrances to a minimum while exploring.
  • Combine with Ruakuri Scenic Reserve trails: After your Aranui Cave tour, explore the nearby Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. The trails wind through native forest, past limestone formations, arches, and sinkholes, offering a longer, immersive nature experience.
  • Combine with other caves: Consider visiting nearby caves like the Waitomo Glowworm Cave or Ruakuri Cave to make the most of your trip.
  • Consider renting a car for multiple cave visits: Public transport in Waitomo is limited, so a car lets you explore Aranui, Glowworm, and Ruakuri Caves at your own pace and make the most of your day.
